Stone Patios

Patio areas are a beautiful use of outdoor space that helps draw people out of the house and into the yard. Design elements such a pergolas, fire pits, water feature, seat walls or dining tables give people a reason to enjoy other areas of the yard.

Even on smaller lot sizes, patios do not have to simply be one big rectangular slab. Patio layouts can be creatively configured to provide multiple tiers, functions and areas of interest. Perfect for guests to break out into smaller groups for intimate conversation.

Sustainable Landscaping

There are several available options for installing a more eco-friendly patio, path or driveway. The basic design concept allows for rain water to flow between the stones/pavers, thus preventing massive storm water runoff due to impervious surfaces. This percolation action not only recharges the local groundwater, but serves as a very efficient filter that combats pollution found in typical stormwater runoff.

Natural Flagstones: By incorporating a mortar-less stone dust that secures the main stones into place, this joint material allows for rainwater to easily percolate into the ground below.

Permeable Pavers: Advances in paver technology now allows for eye catching design, yet still allows for quick and easy rainwater passage into the ground underneath. The pavers lock firmly together but also contain specially designed channels between blocks that allow for water passage below.

Some of our clients utilize the smaller square footage to their advantage by upgrading to higher quality materials, more expensive finishes and installing romantic accessories like fire and water features.

Narrow Lot Designs

You don’t need a massive backyard or huge estate in order to get more outdoor living from your backyard space. Some of our favorite projects involve the challenge presented designing around smaller urban lots and townhomes. The reduced yard scale does NOT mean the absence of luxury outdoor spaces.

By utilizing multiple focal points, different textures, plant sizes, and proportional vertical elements, these classic designer techniques create an absolutely stunning backyard result.

Patio, decks, water & fire features, pergolas, raised entertainment areas, lush greenery, outdoor kitchens…all of these beautiful items are possible and will serve as a entertainment magnet for you and your guests.

Softscapes

Beautiful patio design doesn’t just involve paved areas. Lush greenery and plant life helps provide a natural softness and gentle geometry to the hardscaping. This critical balance of hard and soft is often overlooked, but is highly critical in creating a cohesive look that ties everything together.

It’s the difference between a ‘nice’ patio design and the ‘wow’ factor.

Pergolas

These simple looking yet beautiful vertical elements draw you out into the landscape. Typically used over eating areas, fire pits or hot tubs, a well positioned pergola provides shade from the beating sun.

Smart pergola design defines an outdoor space, creating a destination point for friends and family. The easy addition of soft overhead lighting extends the entertainment and conversations well into the evening.

Lighting Ideas

Landscape lighting is a must in the D.C. metro area. Sweltering summer heat prevents comfortable outdoor usage until the setting sun in almost on the horizon. Done right, landscape lighting makes the best of your backyard investment, highlighting your home's architectural features and drawing attention to prized plantings and trees.

Additional benefits include increased safety and security by helping illuminate stairs, tripping hazards and perimeter entry-points.
